A Storm is Coming

Storm Goretti hit the UK on Friday, bringing heavy snow and strong winds that has caused disruptions across the country. Trees have fallen and disturbed rail and power lines; schools have been closed; meetings at the Birmingham Crown court adjourned; and a blanket of snow has covered the Midlands and beyond. Do note, that it is appropriate to consider those without adequate shelter and heat, as well as the elderly who are impacted by the weather conditions.

However, you might think, when you witness all the media hysteria about the weather, that such cold temperatures in the UK during winter is an anomaly. In January 2025 we had Storm Eowyn, which brought strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England, with widespread travel disruption, closure of schools and loss of power. In January 2024, strong winds and heavy rain from storms Henk, Isha and Jocelyn cause fallen trees, flooding, travel disruption and power cuts across the UK. In January 2023 there was heavy rain and snow. It seems, that the media are “copying and pasting” the same hysterical ‘fear of weather headlines,’ every January to keep viewers. Do not be surprised that when things get warmer in the Spring, which tends to happen every year too, they will soon start pushing the narrative of global warming again.

I am not saying that we should have no concern for the environment. All things were created for Christ and through him, and man was given dominion over all creation, and first instructed to look after the garden of Eden. If we treat our environment badly, then we will suffer the consequences. However, the end of the world via global warming won’t be one of them. The media have threatened for decades that the ice caps will melt and cause worldwide flooding. We know this won’t happen because God has promised that there will never be another worldwide flood. In the end the elements will be destroyed by fire, not water (2 Pet 3:10). We know that the end of the world will not come because of pollution, but it will come by the sovereign will of God and his promise to deal with sin which has corrupted man and the earth alike. No man will know when it will be. No prophet. No president. Not even Greta Thunberg. “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matt 24:36).

I wonder, why doesn’t the government invest money in the country’s infrastructure so that the weather disturbances are kept to a minimum? There are colder countries in the world, and they have prepared and adapted for what they know will occur. Why don’t we improve our trains and power lines? It could save millions of pounds and lives.

Yet, it is easy to point the finger at the government’s lack of preparation, while there are so many people who do not see the need to prepare for a greater storm that is on the horizon – the coming of Christ. We are nearer to His return than ever before. When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times (Matt 16:1-3).

When Christ returns, the sky will vanish like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island will be removed from its place. The kings, the rich, the powerful, the slaves and everyone else will attempt to hide in the caves and plead to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Rev 6:12-17)

There are so many who have not prepared themselves for the storm of all storms that is to come. So many, professing Christians who live practically like atheist and live their lives as if the Master is not on his way back.

Repent and believe for the kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:15).
