Why we are pro-life
The term ‘pro-life’ is loaded term these days, where many people know what it stands against but not what it stands for. A biblical understanding of life is vital for every Christian in this day and age where abortion and euthanasia are encouraged and supported in Government.
Christians are pro-life because Scripture clearly shows us that life is from God; life is precious; and the purpose of life is to glorify God
We are pro-life because life begins and conception and ends when God determines
God knows absolutely everything about us (Psalm 139:1–6) including when, where, and how we will die. Psalm 139:13-16: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be" (also see Exodus 21:22-23, Jer 1:5).
It was the Bible, and not modern science that was first to recognise that life begins at conception. In 2016, scientists captured images of the flash of light that sparks at the very moment a human sperm cell makes contact with an egg. Two thousand years earlier, John had already told us that in Jesus was life, and the life was the light of men (John 1:4). Life begins and ends on God’s terms and not our own.
We are pro-life because all people are made in the image of God
On the last day of creation, God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). The image of God (Latin, imago dei) refers to the immaterial part of humanity. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially. All image-bearers, have intellect, emotions, creativity and a will. It sets human beings apart from the animal world; grants them dominion; and enables them to commune with their Maker. We are made to commune with God and to live peaceably with men. To murder is to destroy the most special part of all God’s creation.
We are pro-life because we are commanded not to murder
As Christians and as human beings, we know that unjustified killing is sin. God’s Word is very clear on this point: “You shall not murder.” And what God says we must obey, or we face the consequences on judgment day.
We are pro-life because there is an individual in the womb
Women do have the right to do what they want with their own body. The issue is, is that the baby is not her body it is another body in the womb, an individual with its own unique genetic make up who has been given life by God. We see this distinction when John the Baptist leaps in the womb (Luke 1:44). In Luke 1:15 it says that John, not his mother, will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
We are pro-life because we have been commissioned to protect the vulnerable and oppressed
Seeking justice for the innocent and defending the weak and vulnerable is a recurring theme in Scripture (see Exodus 23:7; Proverbs 6:16–17; Isaiah 1:17; Jeremiah 22:3). Who is more vulnerable and defenceless than a baby in the womb?
We are pro-life because we will not sacrifice children on the altar of convenience
A poor quality of life is not a justifiable reason to end a life. There are several instances where people sacrificed their children to pagan gods of sex and pleasure and God shows His hatred for this (Jer 32:35, Levi 18:21). Psalm 127:3 states, "Children are a heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward." This verse emphasizes the value and blessing of children as gifts from God.
We are pro-life because we have faith in God
Life is a gift from God. It is the Lord who gives and the Lord who takes away (Job 1:21). Christians are pro-life because they believe in the right to life and they respect God’s decision to give life. To determine who lives and who dies is to play God, and that is a serious offence.
We are pro-life even if the whole world isn’t – because God is.
The main stream media, social norms and culture do not determine what truth is. Truth doesn’t change because God doesn’t change. God’s Word is above what anyone else says or thinks. Christians are pro-life because God, the Bible is clear and ultimately, we will all have to answer to God if we fail to take the biblical view point.
Jesus, who called Himself “the life” (John 11:25; 14:6). Therefore, to love Jesus is to love life.
